Basil
is one of the most popular herbs. Its leaves are oblong, pointed and differ in
size and shape from variety to variety (platofyllos - psillofilos basil). It
has a strong and intense aroma and is the base for many sauces. It is worth
noting that there are more than 60 varieties of basil. In some cultures, basil
symbolizs hospitality, while in Italy it is a symbol of love. According to the legend,
it was the sweet scent of the herb that helped Constantine the Great and his
mother, St. Helena, to discover the True Cross. Its name derives from the Greek
basilikohn, which means "royal”. A
herd associated with the Greek summer, basil is found in all gardens and homes.
Basil is widely used in cooking while basil leaf tea is a pleasant drink, which stimulates the stomach and more generally, the body. Basil tea helps digestion, strengthens memory, and soothes the intestinal system. The essential oil extracted from basil is a remedy for stomatitis and herpes labialis (cold sores).
